Seasonal News: Autumn 2021

We do a lot of hard work. And sometimes when we’re really in it, we look at each other and spout catch phrases that express our sentiment for the task at hand. We feel really clever and say, “that has to go on the back of our t-shirt”. Making t-shirts is not a major priority at the moment - but it’s on the list. As every farmer loves to say, “we’ll get to it this winter when things slow down”.

This past year, while digging trenches, cutting metal, hanging insulation, pulling wire, repairing fence, pouring concrete and tending animals – more accurately, while Brian was doing these things and I was standing watch, holding the baby – our conversations circulated around why we’re doing this, and how it fits into today’s world.

Most of the time, we are full of optimism, purpose, and conviction. We are focused on nourishing people and supporting a more centralized supply chain.

Our Origin Dinners earned their title because growing food, cooking it over fire, and sharing it with family and community is the way our ancestors did it. Every main ingredient we use was harvested just a few hours or days ago, except for our ferments and meats – but those too were prepared to preserve their vitality. We harvested the wood to make the table where you dine and fuel the fires for your food. We set every post and placed every stone on your path. We raised our animals from babies, planted every seed in our gardens, and tended them all by hand. The wind, sun, earth, and rain dictated our plans and guided our efforts.

The complete cycle of life begins in the same place that it ends.

Some of the time when we’re having these conversations, we wonder if what we’re offering will be well-received. Are people ready for this? Will they pick up what we’re putting down? Is our timing right? Tough to say – but there are two things we know for sure. First, when you’re with us, our intention is that you have a relaxing, fulfilling, and inspiring experience. Second, the food we are providing is wholesome, delicious, and real. And we know what that kind of support and sustenance can do for a person’s body, mind and soul.

No matter what brings you to The Burning Barrel, we are grateful that you came. We hope that you leave knowing that your energy is never gone. Your presence keeps this dream and concept moving forward.  You are an integral part of the whole.
